Home Security - How to Improve It
There’s a common misconception that there’s not much point spending a lot of money on home security because if someone wants to break into your home then they will find a way.
It’s true to a certain degree but surely we all agree that we don’t want to make it easy for anyone to steal our prize possessions? The harder it is for someone to get into your home, the longer it will take them and in turn the more likely they are to either give up or get caught trying.
As anyone that has been burgled in the past will tell you, it’s not a very nice experience and can take some people a long time to get over and feel safe again in their own home.
Here are just a few tips to help make your home just a little bit more secure;
Alarm systems
An alarm system can be a great way of scaring a burglar once he has managed to get into your home. If you don’t have an alarm then it’s well worth looking into getting one, if you do have one, make sure you regularly change the codes for added protection. Don’t think that an alarm on its own will protect your home, you still need to secure your home in other ways, after all, it’s better that the burglar doesn’t get into your property in the first place.
Window and door locks
Seems the most obvious doesn’t it? Well it’s surprising how many locks are installed incorrectly, allowing easy entry. If you do have any locks changed then make sure that your locksmith is MLA (Master Locksmiths Association) Registered. If a window or door lock is broken then get that locksmith to come out and fix it, and if they are good, hang on to their number as you never know when you might need them again.
Lights
For obvious reasons most burglaries occur when there is no one home. A house with no interior lights on could be a sign that the house is empty. You can’t leave your lights on the whole time you are out, can you?
The simple answer is get yourself a timer. You can set a timer to turn the lights on and off periodically which from the outside gives the impression that not only is someone home, they are awake and moving around the house. Not many burglars want to attempt a break in while someone is both home and awake.
Get yourself a dog
Owning a dog can be a great way to scare away any potential thieves from entering your home, would you try and enter a property if you could hear a bark coming from inside? Having said that, the added security you gain is just one of the many benefits that come from getting a dog. I would never recommend getting a dog just for that reason, they need to be a part of the family and need love and affection too.
Window grilles
OK, so this one won’t be for everyone but if you really want to make your home as secure as possible, get some window bars or grilles. Everyone would agree that they will increase security but most people don’t have them because of the appearance. If you do like the idea of the security but not the appearance then have a look around, a lot of security companies now offer decorative versions that don’t look so unsightly.
Remember, security can also be an added benefit if you are thinking of selling your home, with some buyers willing to pay for the safety and peace of mind those features might bring.
